Kicking off the semester with one of my favorite lab activities: making Winogradsky columns. It’s a simple way to observe how microbial communities organize themselves and depend on one another over time. We used mud from Horseshoe Lagoon, finely shredded newspaper as a carbon source, and a little gypsum from the garden center for sulfur. That’s the whole setup, no specialized equipment, totally doable at home. Over the next few weeks, layers of different colors will emerge as different microbes
