I use my slime to breathe, to move and to attract water. In fact my slime absorbs 100 times its volume in water. It helps me move along the ground under the redwoods and even climb up trees. My slime is a liquid crystal that acts both like a lubricant and an adhesive. So the…

They’re slimy! They’re sloooow! And they have a very interesting sex life! For today’s #EverythingButTheBirdFriday, we bring you the one and only Banana Slug, your friendly Pacific Northwest gastropod. Traveling at a whopping 6.5 inches per minute, banana slugs are one of the slowest creatures on earth. The amazing slime they rely on to keep them moist has multiple purposes, from locomotion to nutrition to keeping predators at bay (it numbs their tongues!). Banana slugs are hermaphrodites, so te

This slug is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Happy #WildlifeWednesday! 🐌 Banana slugs are pretty neat. They are mollusks and have two pairs of tentacles. The upper pair is the largest and are used to detect light intensity or lack of light, similar to the way human eyes detect light and dark. 🐌 The smaller pair of tentacles is used to detect and differentiate smells, similar to the way human noses detect and differentiate smells. 🐌 For protection, both pairs of tentacles can be retracted inside the s

This is now officially a Banana Slug Stan account. I absolutely love finding these bright yellow slugs exploring the forest floor, even when I’m competing with them for mushrooms (which is often). #bananaslug #bananaslugs #ariolimax #slug #slugs #sluglove #slugsquad #naturevibes #timelapse #biology #ucsc #natureeducation #fascinatedbyfungi #naturevideo #biology #learnonfacebook | Fascinated By Fungi

This is BANANAS 🍌! The second largest slug in the WORLD can grow up to 25cm (9.8 inches) long and hit a top speed of a whopping 16.5cm (6.5 inches) per minute (0.009 km/hr or 0.006 miles/ hr) . Deep in my banana slug era..Banana slugs are equipped with 4 sensory stalks, 2 eye stalks, and 2 chemical receptor “taste” stalks. They eat using a set of iron imbued scrapers known as a radula. The hole in the side of the head is called a pneumostome, it is where they breathe and breed. .They glide around on a layer of water loving (hygroscopic) slime that serves not only as their way of getting around but also as a defense against predators (licking a banana slug is not a pleasant experience).

Spider Man or Banana Slug? Banana slugs are amazing animals that can absorb 100x times their weight in water to stay moist and produce mucus. Their slime is a liquid crystal, which they use to breath, move, reproduce and even as an adhesive. As hermaphrodites they are both male and female and will spend hours and a lot of mucus during mating rituals. Often times they will eat their mucus and reproductive organs after mating. These colorful gastropods are the decomposers of the redwood forest, ea
