Today, Nepalese women resist cultural traditions and become community leaders, environmental policies and business owners. In October 2015, Nepal elected its first president, Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

Globally, some progress on women’s rights has been achieved. In Nepal, 88.9% of legal frameworks that promote, enforce and monitor gender equality under the SDG indicator, with a focus on violence against women, are in place. As of February 2024, 33.1% of seats in parliament were held by women.

Several laws have restricted Nepali women's right to travel and work abroad. In 2012 the government banned women under 30 from working in Gulf states, although the age threshold and geographical scope of the ban has changed.
