House Republicans have unveiled a proposal to slash funding for the nation’s largest anti-hunger program by an estimated $290 billion as part of their sweeping plan to turn President Trump’s agenda into a legislative reality.

States will likely serve fewer people in need of food assistance, experts say, as Congress says it’s rooting out waste to meet spending-reduction goals for tax cuts.

The legislation, unveiled May 13 by the GOP, would scale back federal spending on food and health-care assistance.
