Large enough for a person to fall into, the hole is some 35 feet deep, and repairs should take up to two months. Contractors will dig more than 30 feet through sandstone and limestone, assess the extent of the damage and then rebuild the sanitary tunnel.

A part of West Seventh Street in downtown St. Paul is closed due to a sinkhole in the roadway, city officials say.

West 7th Street has reopened to reduced traffic after an "unexpected," 35-foot-deep sinkhole emerged in the street. The busy street was closed Friday between Grand Avenue and Kellogg Boulevard after the sinkhole appeared outside Burger Moe's on Thursday, but has since reopened to traffic, albeit only a single lane in each direction.
