A coalition of attorneys general from 20 states and Washington, D.C., is asking a federal judge to stop the U.S. Department of Justice from withholding federal funds earmarked for crime victims if states don’t cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced Monday that he is leading a multi-state lawsuit against the federal government, accusing it of illegally using crime victim aid as leverage in its immigration agenda.

Twenty states and Washington, DC, sued the Trump administration on Monday, alleging that it is improperly withholding hundreds of millions of dollars meant to help victims of crimes in order to force states into cooperating with federal immigration enforcement efforts.
