A federal appeals court will decide Tuesday whether California can block President Donald Trump from taking over the National Guard.

An escalating clash pits a Republican president looking to fulfill his mass deportation goals against a Democratic governor with White House aspirations hoping to mobilize opposition.

The Trump administration has paused immigration raids targeting farm and hotel workers, but the president has called for more ICE raids in cities.

On Monday, there was a quiet hum of traffic passing on Colorado Boulevard outside the AC Hotel. A hotel employee, who declined to give his name, said it was quiet overnight with no additional protests outside the building. A lone flier that read “ICE out of LA” was placed on a third-floor balcony.

As dozens of workers are arrested by federal agents on California farms, others are skipping work in fear. Meanwhile fields go unharvested.

The development comes a day after an appeals court temporarily blocked a judge’s order that directed President Trump to return control of the California National Guard.

Driving around in hopes of witnessing agents jumping out of trucks and detaining immigrants has become a grim pastime and form of protest for some Angelenos.
