Evacuations are underway due to a fire in a natural gas well near the Continuing Education building at the University of Texas Arlington.

The Arlington Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Thursday on the University of Texas at Arlington campus.

At the site, French oil and gas company TotalEnergies plans to drill 10 new gas wells at 2020 S. Watson Road, just down the street from The Mother’s Heart Learning Center, an Arlington day care center that predominantly serves children of color.

It was the first time in 12 years that Arlington opened new land for fracking. TotalEnergies will drill 10 new gas wells that are two-tenths of a mile from a daycare center amid an uptick in Barnett Shale activity.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which involved an air compressor inside a shed at the site, firefighters said.
