Phillies pitcher José Alvarado has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for exogenous testosterone, a performance enhancing substance.

Dave Dombrowski said the positive test was caused by a weight loss drug Alvarado, 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA and seven saves in seven chances, took during the offseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies entered this season with World Series aspirations, and José Alvarado was one of the reasons for that optimism.

Alvarado’s suspension and unavailability for October all but guarantee that Dombrowski will swing a deal for a reliever at the trade deadline.
