India attacked nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir on Wednesday with at least three deaths reported, and Pakistan said it was mounting a response as the worst fighting in years erupted between the longstanding enemies.

India fired missiles across the border into the Pakistani-controlled territory of Kashmir, and Pakistan says the strikes early Wednesday have caused civilian casualties.

India’s strikes come in retaliation to a militant attack that killed at least 26 people, mostly tourists, in the picturesque resort town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir on 22 April. Militants opened fire on people who were visiting Baisaran, a mountain-top meadow three miles (5 km) from Pahalgam.
