Former captain Chris Gayle hit an explosive double century to propel West Indies to 362 for two on the opening day of the first test against Sri Lanka on Monday.

He added a couple more sixes in 35 against Sri Lanka, but this World Cup hasn't been vintage for him. Gayle has looked all of his 39 1/2 years on the slow, sticky pitches of England.

Lara remains the only player in history to score 400 not out in a Test innings. Interestingly, Gayle himself came close to breaking the mark, scoring 333 against Sri Lanka in 2010.
